Brief on Congress President and Congress Vice President’s meeting with President of China on 19th September 2014

Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi along with former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi, Dr Karan Singh and Shri Anand Sharma called on the visiting Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping this morning.

The Chinese President referring to the significance of relationship between India and China, underlined that the partnership between the two countries had grown from strength to strength and stressed that economic engagement is important for both the countries to remain meaningfully engaged.

He further spoke about industrial parks, advancement in Railways, and investment in the infrastructure sector. Mr Xi said that efforts in this direction were in continuity with what had already been negotiated when Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister and they were now gathering momentum. He expressed satisfaction with the visit.

The Congress President said, that the country had broad consensus across political spectrum to strengthen the relationship between India and China which are two large economies and major countries of Asia. In today’s multi-polar world China and India had to play an important role. Smt. Gandhi stressed that although now in opposition, the Congress Party remained committed to strengthening of the relationship between the two countries, as it did when it was in Government.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said, it is encouraging to see expansion of relationship which is going to prove important for manufacturing and infrastructure work that is already being done. Both countries are putting due emphasis on important areas of development. He further remarked that peace and tranquility on border is imperative and we have to remain fully committed to it as these were the guiding principles. We have to remain steadfast to resolve all issues as was agreed between the two countries earlier. The relationship has to be inclusive, cooperative and development oriented, he said.

Smt. Gandhi speaking to the President said that the Indian National Congress and Communist Party of China shared a historic relationship. President Xi recalled that this relationship got institutionalized when the Congress President led a delegation to China in 2008 and two MoU’s were signed institutionalizing regular exchanges between the two parties.

Smt. Gandhi also mentioned that the Nation as indeed the Congress Party was commemorating the 125th birth Anniversary of Pt. Jawaharlal Lal Nehru this year. The Chinese President, in this context, remarked that China values Nehru’s contribution immensely and fondly remembers the relationship between Pt. Nehru and first Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. People in China remembered him with great fondness.

In the end the Chinese President extended invitations to Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi and delegations to visit the Republic of China and hoped that such exchanges will strengthen the relations further.
